Audience- how someone view it
The way that someone views Jasper Jones is influenced by their personal context and the events at the time that the novel was set. Some of the things that influence the way that they view is a person's:
-Race
-Age
-Community factors (where they live)
Age
One factor that influences a persons context is their age. Age is such an influential factor because to relate to the context of the main characters, such as Charlie, it is more understandable to the viewers. However because the novel was set in a different time period, some readers may have been that age at the time it was set in the time period of the Vietnam war (1955-1975). For example, if a young person were to read Jasper Jones, they may not understand the themes and view differently to an older reader who has lived through the time of setting so can relate better. As a result of a readers age, the way that they read Jasper Jones is different to another person's way of reading.
Race
Race is another factor that contributes and influences the way that someone reads Jasper Jones. Because Jasper Jones is written by an Australian, they may not relate as well as others. For example Jeffery, Charlie's best friend is an asian male, throughout the novel he takes the piss out of himself like in chapter 4 when he gets grounded, he tells Charlie he can't come out and play because "I got da B prush in englais test". This is a stereotype that all asian parents have a high expectation of there children and will not except any grade below an A. If an asian were to read this, they may not understand the stereotype and find this offensive. This is why a person's race influence how they read Jasper Jones.
Community Factors- (where they live)
A third factor that influences how a person reads the novel Jasper Jones is their community factors. The reason that this effects the way they read is because of where the novel is set- Corrigan in Australia. Corrigan is a small Western Australian town about 230 kilometres south-east of Perth. A person that lives in a bigger city like Perth will view differently to someone who lives in a small town. This is because they can relate to what it would be like for their town to be flooded with police out of no where, they know that this doesn't happen very often, where as a viewer that lives in a city such as Perth may not understand what it would be like and would not catch on to the themes presented in the novel vs someone living in a small town. From this example, it is evident that a persons community factors influence the way that they view.
