My reception
My reception and how I read the novel Jasper Jones is influenced by my context. Because my context is different to to other people's, I read the novel Jasper Jones differently. Some of the points that influence how I read and shape my context include:
-My age, because my age is similar to the main characters)
-Where I live, where I live is completely different to where the novel is set so I read differently
-My values, because of my values, how I read is also influenced.
My age is one factor that influences my context. This is because my age is similar to the main characters, so I can relate to the ideas presented to readers. Charlie Bucktin, one of the main characters, is a 13 year old boy, a boy in his teens. I am a similar age to Charlie so I can relate to what is going on. For example, I know what it is like for someone to marked as an outsider and bullied like Jeffery Lu is because i've seen it happen to people I know. Because I am roughly the same age as the Charlie, I understand what it's like to experience 'first love' like h does with Eliza Wishart. As a result of my age being similar to the main characters such as Charlie, Eliza and Jeffery, I can relate to some of the ideas presented in Jasper Jones
A second factor that influences my context and therefore my response to the novel is where I live. I live in the Western Suburbs of Perth City which is nearly the complete opposite of where this novel is set, which is why I view the setting vs someone who lives in a remote area, and is used to the kind of setting in Jasper Jones- Corrigan. Someone who is from a small town like Corrigan views the flurry of police coming to Corrigan in a different way I do. Because I live in a city where it is always busy with cars everywhere, I am use to it being busy. I'm not saying that i'm use to a whole squad of police cars coming down the street but I view differently to someone who lives in a more remote area and isn't use to it being busy. Because of where I live, the way that I view Jasper Jones is different to another persons way of viewing.
The way I view is also influenced by my personal values. I value family so I understand what it would be like for Eliza Wishart to cope with a family member that has committed suicide after a number of beating from their own father. Another one of my values is my sport. Jeffery also values his sport in Jasper Jones and I view the scene where he isn't being accepted by the cricket team even though he is the best one there with disgust because if this happened to me I would be furious. As a result of my personal values, the way that I view certain parts of Jasper Jones is different to a person with different personal values to mine.
