Context of production
Jasper Jones is written by the Australian author Craig Silvey who is known for other titles such as 'The Amber Amulet' and 'Rhubarb' as well as Jasper Jones. Jasper Jones was published in 2009 and was his second book. Jasper Jones has picked awards such as ABIA 2010: Book of the year and Indie book of the year award, 2009: overall winner and fiction winner. Craig Silvey grew up on an orchard in a small town south east of Perth know as Dwellingup. Where he grew up influences how he wrote Jasper Jones.
Jasper Jones is set in the town of Corrigan in Western Australia. Silvey was influenced as to where to set the novel as he to grew up in a small town similar to Corrigan. This part of the reason thatCraig Silvey set Jasper Jones in Corrigan because he can relate to it and knows what it's like. Craig Silvey knows what it would be like for a whole squad of police cars, helicopters and divers to come into the small town where he lives. This is part of the authors context and gives reason as to why he set it in Corrigan.
Another factor that influences context of production is the time that it is set. Craig Silvey has set Jasper Jones in the time period of the Vietnam war. Silvey was born in 1982 which is after the time it is set. This means that the time it is set has deeper meaning then just 'it was set then because he felt like it'. The time that it is set reflects a time when parents were harder on their children. This is evident in chapter 3 on page 94. Charlie is being punished for going out late the night before. As punishment he has to dig a hole in the backyard in heat he describes as "...desert like". "I am thirsty. I am dying. I am so bloody hot I feel like I am digging my own grave". This shows that parents in those days gave proper punishments where as today, a parent might just send their child to their room... To their laptop, iphone etc. As you can see, the time that Craig Silvey set Jasper Jones reflects a time when parents were hard on their children.
